PHILADELPHIA, PA – An AutoZone employee struck in a brutal hit-and-run in Port Richmond has died from his injuries, according to police. Kevin Taylor, remembered by family and friends as a “gentle giant,” was a devoted husband and father of three.
Taylor’s sister, Shante Thompson, expressed the deep sorrow his passing has brought to their family, emphasizing that he was a positive force who did not deserve such a tragic fate. “He never put any negative energy into the world,” she said.
The incident occurred last Sunday when Taylor went to work early, hoping to return home to watch the Philadelphia Eagles play. Tragically, he never made it back. While delivering auto parts, his pickup truck was violently hit by a black Dodge Ram that ran a red light at Richmond and Venango Street. The vehicle was allegedly driven by a group of juveniles, resulting in a collision that left Taylor critically injured.
Taylor was quickly rushed to the hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries four days later. The crash also involved at least five other vehicles. Surveillance footage captured three of the teens jumping into an SUV that had been trailing them and fleeing the scene.
Dennis Thompson, Taylor’s brother, urged those responsible to come forward. “The right thing is to turn yourselves in,” he said, appealing to their conscience despite the fear and confusion surrounding the event.
As they prepare for his funeral, Taylor’s family finds some solace in his decision to be an organ donor, sharing that his legacy will continue through the lives he will now touch.
Community efforts are underway to support Taylor’s family, with funds being raised to assist with funeral costs. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate, focusing on whether the Dodge Ram was stolen. No arrests have been made as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
