Suspect Arrested After Hourslong Atlanta SWAT Standoff

Authorities said the 50-year-old man was wanted in connection with an alleged May assault at a Stone Mountain home.

ATLANTA, GA — A man accused of raping a woman while she slept in her Stone Mountain home was arrested after an hourslong SWAT standoff at an Atlanta residence, authorities said.

Deacon Tyrone Hopkinsbey, 50, was taken into custody Thursday, July 9, at a home on Brownlee Road, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said Hopkinsbey was wanted on a warrant accusing him of raping the woman on May 26.

Members of the sheriff’s office Fugitive Unit and the Atlanta Police Department’s SWAT team surrounded the Brownlee Road property for several hours before Hopkinsbey was arrested. Fairburn police officers and Atlanta Fire Rescue personnel also responded, according to local reports.

Authorities said the woman was asleep inside her Stone Mountain home when the alleged assault occurred. Officials have not publicly identified her, and further details about the circumstances surrounding the allegation have not been released.

Investigators also have not said what evidence led them to identify Hopkinsbey as a suspect. Information about any relationship between Hopkinsbey and the woman, how he allegedly entered the home or when the arrest warrant was issued was not immediately available.

Officials have released few details about the standoff, including what caused it to begin or whether Hopkinsbey was armed. Authorities said he was taken into custody without further incident. No injuries connected to the police response were reported by the agencies or news organizations covering the arrest.

Hopkinsbey was booked into the DeKalb County Jail and was being held without bond following his arrest, according to authorities. A rape charge is an allegation, and Hopkinsbey is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court.

It was not immediately clear whether Hopkinsbey had hired an attorney who could comment on his behalf. Court records detailing his next scheduled hearing or other possible charges were not publicly available in the reports reviewed.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have not announced whether additional arrests or charges are expected. Hopkinsbey remained in DeKalb County custody as the criminal case moved into the court system.
