SIMPSON COUNTY, MS – In a devastating incident along State Route 149, part of a Mississippi bridge gave way during demolition, resulting in the deaths of three construction workers and injuries to four others.
The bridge, crossing the Strong River, was under a significant $25 million replacement initiative by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT).
Officials reported that the collapse occurred Wednesday afternoon, with workers from T.L. Wallace Construction actively involved in the demolition at the time. An MDOT inspector at the location escaped without injury. The bridge had been closed from September 18 as part of the bridge replacement program.
