Deputies said a man and woman continued fighting after their vehicle crashed near Apopka before a bystander stepped in.
APOPKA, FL — A bystander was shot and killed Tuesday morning after trying to intervene in a fight between a man and woman whose vehicle had crashed in the Apopka area, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 8:30 a.m. to the area of Plymouth Sorrento Road and West Ponkan Road after 911 callers reported a man and woman physically fighting inside a vehicle. Authorities said the vehicle crashed while the confrontation was taking place, but the dispute did not end after the crash.
The man and woman got out of the vehicle and continued fighting, deputies said. At some point, a bystander attempted to get between them and was shot. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where the person died from the injuries.
Authorities had not publicly released the victim’s name or age as of Tuesday afternoon. Officials also had not announced who fired the shot or provided details about what immediately preceded the shooting.
The man and woman involved in the original fight remained at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities had not announced any criminal charges in connection with the shooting as the investigation continued.
The shooting followed an unusual sequence that began with reports of violence inside a moving or occupied vehicle, continued through a crash and then escalated after the people involved got out. Investigators had not released additional information about what caused the original dispute or the circumstances that led to the crash.
Deputies continued investigating the shooting Tuesday. Authorities had not released further information about possible arrests, charges or the identity of the person who fired the weapon.
