FORT CALHOUN, NE – A respected Catholic priest was fatally assaulted at his church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska on Sunday, stated local officials. The man of faith, known as Father Stephen Gutgsell, who served at St. John the Baptist Church, was assaulted within the place of worship’s rectory.
Following the violent encounter, he was subsequently transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Tragically, Gutgsell succumbed to his injuries whilst in their care. At 65 years old, he was widely recognized within the local religious community.
The assault transpired at around 5:05 a.m., as confirmed by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Upon their arrival on the scene, deputies discovered a suspect situated within the rectory. The individual was immediately taken into custody and moved to a nearby county correctional facility.
It’s important to note that this investigation is very much active and ongoing. No details regarding the identity of the suspect or specifics surrounding Gutgsellās death have been disclosed thus far. Furthermore, the motive behind the deadly assault remains unclear. However, the Sheriff’s Office has indicated that there are no further threats to public safety related to this incident.
Responding to the tragic event, the Archdiocese of Omaha officially stated, “The Archdiocese of Omaha is praying for Father Stephen Gutgsell.” They call upon the mourning community to join the archbishop in offering prayerful support for Gutgsell’s loved ones, as well as the broader parish community.
