Driver killed in police-involved shooting after traffic stop

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Authorities in Chesterfield County have publically released the identity of a suspect who was killed in a police-related shooting early Sunday morning.

Chesterfield County Police say the events unfolded around 4:45 a.m. when officers made a traffic stop for erratic driving on Iron Bridge Road. The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Shawn D. Hill, exited his vehicle on Jessup Road and approached an officer, defying commands.

According to police reports, Hill resisted arrest and was in a physical confrontation with the officer. During the fight, Hill attempted to seize the officer’s firearm. In response, the officer deployed non-lethal measures, including a Taser and pepper spray, but Hill re-entered his car and fled north on Jessup Road.

The situation escalated further when the officer pursued Hill onto Pineland Road. In a dramatic turn, Hill executed a U-turn near Ronson Road and Spoke Court, firing multiple shots at the pursuing officer’s vehicle. As Hill drove toward the intersection of Pineland Road and Ronson Road, he encountered a second officer and discharged his weapon, prompting a return of fire.

The pursuit continued with Hill leading officers back onto Jessup Road toward Iron Bridge Road. There, a coordinated effort by a third and second officer resulted in gunfire aimed at Hill’s vehicle, eventually bringing his car to a stop in the westbound lane of Iron Bridge Road.

Despite the exchange of gunfire, none of the officers sustained physical injuries in the confrontation. Hill was declared dead at the scene, marking the tragic end of the chaos.

In line with departmental protocol, the three officers who were involved in the fatal incident have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is being conducted.
