Eight-year-old accidentally killed after driving into target practice area

COCHISE COUNTY, AZ – In a tragic incident days before Christmas, an eight-year-old boy was fatally shot in the chest after accidentally driving into a restricted target practice area. Bradley John Shockley was riding a four-wheeler with a friend on Monday when the accident occurred.

According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, a .22 caliber bullet fired from a rifle struck Bradley in the chest. He was pronounced dead in less than an hour after being transported to the Benson Hospital.

Bradley’s grief-stricken mother, Ella Scofield, told reporters that the boy’s death was a complete accident. She shared fond memories of her young son, whose curiosity and love for books marked his innocent charm. She recollected his eagerness and excitement for Christmas, as he would often sit by the gifts, trying to guess what was inside.

Reports say that the shooter was also deeply affected by the incident. The Shockley family, showing immense grace, expressed their lack of animosity towards them and reaffirmed their continued friendship.
Bradley’s life will be celebrated on December 29 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. David, AZ, with his favorite meal, spaghetti, being served.

As the Sheriff’s Office continues investigating the incident, they plan to submit their findings to the county attorney.
