Police identified the three as Patrick Lynch and his children, James and Caroline, after they were found near a municipal parking garage.
MT. LEBANON, PA — A father and his two young children were found dead Tuesday near a parking garage behind the Mt. Lebanon municipal building in what authorities described as an apparent murder-suicide.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the three as Patrick Lynch, 42, James Lynch, 8, and Caroline Lynch, 6. Police said all three suffered injuries consistent with an apparent fall, but investigators had not released additional details about what led to the deaths late Tuesday.
Police officers, firefighters and emergency medical crews were called to the area near Washington Road shortly after 4 p.m. after three people were reported unconscious on Municipal Way, next to the parking garage. First responders attempted CPR, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Jason Haberman initially told reporters investigators were not treating the deaths as an accident. Later Tuesday, the Allegheny County Police Department said preliminary information indicated the case was an apparent murder-suicide. Authorities did not immediately release further details about the sequence of events or what may have happened before the three were found.
The deaths prompted a large response near the municipal building, with Mt. Lebanon police joined by the Allegheny County Police Department and the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office. Police said there was no continuing threat to the public as investigators worked at the scene. Vehicles remaining inside the parking garage were being escorted out with police assistance.
Haberman said the incident was expected to have a deep impact on the community. “There will be a significant amount of trauma associated with this event for the community,” he said during a news conference. He also offered condolences to relatives and friends of those who died.
The Mt. Lebanon School District told families that Markham and Washington elementary schools would be closed Wednesday. The district said students at other schools who remained home would have their absences excused and that counselors would be available. Authorities and school officials did not immediately release additional information about the children’s connection to the schools.
The incident unfolded in the center of Mt. Lebanon, a suburban community about 5 miles south of Pittsburgh. Washington Elementary School is located along Washington Road near the municipal complex, while the surrounding area includes homes, businesses and government offices. Police activity remained concentrated around the garage and adjacent roadway as the investigation continued Tuesday evening.
Investigators had not publicly disclosed what may have led to the deaths or released a more detailed account of the events before the three were discovered. Police said the investigation remained active, and additional findings were expected to depend on work by county investigators and the medical examiner.
