A tragic turn of events has resulted in a man facing a series of charges after his firearm was inadvertently accessed by a 3-year-old child who tragically shot himself.
Benjamin Bishop, the firearm’s owner, was indicted on Friday on three counts: involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and reckless homicide.
Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser stated that the young victim, Jared Green, self-inflicted the fatal gunshot wound on March 30th.
Emergency services were alerted and quickly arrived at a residence on Park Avenue in Hamilton. There, they discovered the toddler with a devastating injury to his head.
Following the shooting, young Jared was rushed to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. However, he passed away from his injuries the next day, as confirmed by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.
Bishop’s former employment as a Centerville police officer was revealed by the Journal-News. Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Lindsay Sheehan added that Bishop’s loaded firearm had been discovered unsecured on a windowsill.
