Roger Bradford was arrested in Pennsylvania after authorities found his wife, Lisa Bradford, fatally shot at their Aldie home.
ALDIE, VA — A Loudoun County man has been charged with first-degree murder after his wife was found fatally shot inside their Aldie home, prompting a multi-state search that ended with his arrest in Pennsylvania, authorities said.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at about 12:10 p.m. Sept. 22 to a report of a shooting in the 24000 block of Quimby Oaks Place. Deputies found Lisa Bradford, 54, dead at the scene. Her husband, Roger Bradford, 60, had left before deputies arrived, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities charged him with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Sheriff Mike Chapman said a relative contacted authorities after communicating with Roger Bradford and directed deputies to the couple’s home. Authorities have said the shooting appeared to be domestic in nature, but investigators have not publicly established a motive. The sheriff’s office said there was no continuing threat to the public.
Investigators determined that Bradford had left in a rental vehicle and tracked it as the search expanded from Virginia through Maryland and into Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania State Police took him into custody in Bedford, Pennsylvania, several hours after deputies responded to the Aldie home. Maryland State Police and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the search, Loudoun County authorities said.
Investigators said a handgun was used in the shooting. In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities said the weapon had not been recovered. Officials continued processing the home and investigating the circumstances surrounding Lisa Bradford’s death.
Lisa Bradford was a Northern Virginia real estate agent and mother of three. People who knew her described her as active in her neighborhood and the regional real estate community. The Dulles Area Association of Realtors mourned her death, while friends and colleagues planned a community vigil in her memory. Neighbors also described her as a familiar and caring presence in the Aldie community.
Additional information emerged after the shooting from earlier federal court records involving Roger Bradford. He previously pleaded guilty in a wire fraud case and served time in federal prison. In a court filing earlier this year, Bradford described financial and family strain associated with the conviction and said his marriage was heading toward divorce. Those statements were made months before the shooting and do not establish a motive in the homicide case.
Authorities said the couple’s three children were not at the home when the shooting occurred. Two were attending college and another was in high school, according to officials. Investigators had not publicly identified any other person believed to have been involved in Lisa Bradford’s death.
Roger Bradford initially remained in Pennsylvania while authorities pursued his return to Virginia. During a Pennsylvania court appearance, he waived extradition, clearing a legal step required for his transfer to Virginia. Authorities had not publicly announced when that transfer would occur. The criminal charges against Bradford are allegations, and the case has not been adjudicated.
