Police say three people were fatally stabbed on Exodus Way in the Normandy Estates area.
JACKSONVILLE, FL — A 30-year-old man remained jailed without bond after police said he fatally stabbed three people Thursday on Jacksonville’s Westside in an attack that a victim’s family member said began over missing money.
Austin Fisher faces three counts of second-degree murder and one count of armed robbery in the deaths of 27-year-old Savannah Barber, 49-year-old Edwin Barber and 37-year-old Shad Cole. The killings shook the Normandy Estates neighborhood and left relatives grieving a woman, her stepfather and her fiancé as investigators continue to piece together what happened inside and outside a home on Exodus Way.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was called to Exodus Way early Thursday after reports that someone had been stabbed. Officers found Edwin Barber on a porch with a stab wound to his chest. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Police then went to Barber’s home down the street and found Savannah Barber inside a bedroom with multiple stab wounds. As officers searched nearby, they found Cole with multiple stab wounds on the porch of another house. Savannah Barber and Cole were pronounced dead at the scene. Amy Barber, Savannah Barber’s mother and Edwin Barber’s wife, said the deaths have left the family stunned. “She did not deserve this, or my husband, or even Shad, any of them,” Barber said. “I just don’t understand it.”
Police said the first call came around 3 a.m. Thursday, when dispatchers were told a man was knocking on the front door of a home on Exodus Way. Officers later learned Edwin Barber had been stabbed at his own home and ran to a neighbor’s house for help. Fisher was identified as the likely suspect through community tips, police said. Amy Barber said she was told the argument started over $600 that was supposedly missing. She said Fisher had been living in a shed on the property. She also said investigators told her Fisher allegedly waited until people were asleep before the stabbings. Police have not publicly released a full arrest report or a complete motive, and some details about the sequence remain unclear.
After the attack, Fisher left the area, police said. A family living nearby later told local reporters that a man who introduced himself as Austin knocked on their door around 6:45 a.m. Thursday, asked for water and said he had done something he would not be forgiven for. Bob Isacs said the man described stabbing people after a fight and appeared calm but scared. Isacs said his family did not yet know about the killings and paid for an Uber ride after the man said he wanted to see his mother. After seeing news about the triple stabbing, the family contacted police. Amy Barber said Fisher also told people what he had done while trying to get away.
Police found Fisher at a motel in the Normandy Village area after receiving tips from the community. The Sheriff’s Office said SWAT officers went to the motel to arrest him, but he refused to come out. After an hours-long standoff, officers took him into custody. Fisher appeared in court Friday morning, where a judge ordered him held without bond. His next court date is June 18. Prosecutors had not announced any upgraded charges as of the first appearance, and police had not said whether more charges could follow. The case remains active, with detectives expected to review witness statements, physical evidence and any video from homes or nearby businesses.
Family members said Savannah Barber and Cole were engaged, and Edwin Barber was Savannah’s stepfather. Neighbors described a disturbing scene after the attack. One neighbor said she felt guilt after learning someone had run to a porch for help. Another said the violence left people in the area uneasy. Amy Barber said the loss of three people at once has been hard to understand because the dispute described to her involved money. She said she wants the case to move forward and said Fisher should face the harshest punishment available. Her comments came as relatives and friends tried to absorb the deaths and remember the three victims beyond the violence that ended their lives.
Fisher remained in the Duval County jail Monday, June 1, with no bond set. The next scheduled milestone in the case is his June 18 court appearance, when the charges and evidence are expected to move further through the court process.
