The three-day Netflix promotion places a performer in a furnished room about 30 feet above the busy Los Angeles street.
LOS ANGELES, CA — A man spending three days inside a furnished billboard above Sunset Boulevard has become an unusual roadside attraction, drawing pedestrians and drivers who stop to watch him wave, dance and communicate from a room suspended about 30 feet above the street.
The installation is a Netflix publicity stunt for “The Last House,” a sci-fi thriller released Friday. The billboard near Sunset Boulevard and Selma Avenue was transformed into an enclosed living room to echo the movie’s central premise: a family suddenly finds itself sealed inside its home with no apparent way to escape.
The performer, whose identity has not been publicly announced in reports about the promotion, can be seen through the billboard’s large window. He communicates with people below using a whiteboard, sometimes writing short messages while spectators take photos and videos. The installation began Thursday and is scheduled to continue through Saturday.
ABC7 reported that numerous people stopped at the site Thursday evening, and more visitors arrived after seeing images of the unusual billboard on social media. Some initially questioned whether the figure inside was a real person. Noel Braham told the station he first thought he was watching “an AI bot” before the performer waved back.
The billboard has been designed to resemble a house rather than a conventional advertisement. The space includes furniture and a large window facing Sunset Boulevard. Other reports described the room as air-conditioned and equipped with ordinary items that allow the performer to appear to carry on with daily life while traffic moves below.
The setup mirrors one of the main elements of “The Last House.” Netflix says the film follows a family of four who are mysteriously sealed inside their home and must survive as their resources diminish while an unexplained threat remains outside. In the film, family members also use a whiteboard to communicate, a detail reproduced in the Sunset Boulevard promotion.
The movie stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as Ann and Jason, the parents at the center of the story. Riley Chung and Noah Alexander Sosnowski play their children, Ruth and Graham, with Emma Ho and Gabriel Barbosa also appearing in the cast. Louis Leterrier directed the film from a screenplay by Matthew Robinson.
Netflix has promoted the movie as a survival story built around the idea of a home becoming both shelter and confinement. The billboard turns that concept into a public performance, placing the enclosed room in one of Los Angeles’ most visible advertising corridors and allowing commuters to watch the performer in real time.
The stunt has also generated the kind of public reaction the campaign appears designed to create. Madeline Rhom of Hollywood told ABC7 that the performer was “very playful” and interactive. Other spectators stopped to photograph him, while the performer responded to questions written on whiteboards from below.
As of Friday, the performer remained inside the elevated room, with the promotion expected to continue through Saturday. Netflix released “The Last House” for streaming Friday, Aug. 7.
