All three were forced to leave campus pending an appeal of their suspensions. While awaiting a decision, they attended classes remotely. Then the devastating notice came: the appeal was denied. Additionally, they must reapply for admission for the fall 2021 session — which has no openings for on-campus living.
At least two of the girls’ parents are considering legal action over the loss of $16,000 in nonrefundable tuition costs, the setback of their daughters’ graduation timeline, and the blot on their records should they choose to change schools. While UMass Amherst officials say they knew the rules and consequences, it should be noted that some are pointing out the hypocrisy of that stance. The school allowed a parade and gatherings without masks to celebrate the 2021 NCAA Men’s Hockey championship — how is that just?
