A woman was hospitalized in stable condition after police said her boyfriend shot her before fleeing in an SUV Tuesday morning.
TEMPLE HILLS, MD — A man suspected of shooting his girlfriend during a domestic incident was found dead inside an SUV at a Temple Hills shopping center Tuesday morning after police located his vehicle and declared a barricade situation, Prince George’s County police said.
Police received a report of a domestic-related shooting at about 7:15 a.m. Sept. 22 in the 5300 block of Fisher Road. The injured woman told responding officers that her boyfriend had shot her before leaving the area, according to police. She was also able to provide officers with a description of the vehicle he was driving. The woman was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition later Tuesday.
About 10 minutes after the initial call, patrol officers who were heading toward the shooting scene spotted an SUV matching the description the woman had provided. Officers stopped the vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 4800 block of St. Barnabas Road, police said. Investigators said the SUV had heavily tinted windows.
Officers ordered the driver to leave the vehicle, but police said he did not respond. Authorities then treated the encounter as a barricade situation and brought additional officers to the shopping center. When police later approached the SUV, they found the driver dead inside, Deputy Chief James Keleti said during a Tuesday morning news conference.
Investigators believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said he was the only person inside the SUV and that a gun was recovered. Based on the preliminary investigation and the description provided by the injured woman, detectives believe the man was the suspect in the earlier shooting. Authorities had not publicly released the names of either person as of Tuesday afternoon.
The police response affected the area around St. Barnabas Road as officers investigated the SUV and the shopping center. Investigators also remained at the original shooting scene near Fisher Road. A large area around the Heather Hill apartment complex was blocked off while detectives processed the scene and gathered evidence.
Keleti described the incident as a tragedy affecting both families. Police have not released additional details about what led to the shooting or circumstances preceding it. No other people were reported injured at the shopping center, and authorities said the investigation remained preliminary.
The incident began as a domestic shooting investigation and developed quickly after officers located the SUV within minutes of receiving the initial call. Police have not announced any additional suspects or said whether anyone else was involved. Investigators were continuing to examine evidence from both locations Tuesday.
Prince George’s County police said the case remains under investigation. The woman continued receiving hospital treatment in stable condition, while investigators worked to establish the full sequence of events surrounding the shooting and the suspect’s death.
