Investigators linked the death of 22-year-old Eddrick Bethune to a shooting, abduction and intentionally burned vehicle found miles away.
MIAMI, FL — A 22-year-old man abducted from a North Miami apartment complex after gunfire erupted early Sunday was later found dead from gunshot wounds along a roadway in south Miami-Dade County, investigators said.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Eddrick Bethune. Authorities said the investigation began with reports of gunfire shortly after midnight Sunday at the Aliro Apartments, 14040 Biscayne Blvd. Investigators later connected the North Miami incident to Bethune’s death and to a vehicle that authorities said was deliberately set on fire in another part of the county.
North Miami police said officers responded to the apartment complex at about 12:07 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. A person suffering from gunshot wounds later arrived at a hospital and was transferred for additional treatment. Authorities have not publicly explained that person’s connection, if any, to Bethune’s abduction or death.
Cellphone video recorded by a resident showed people jumping from a window at the apartment building and running from the area after the gunfire. Video from the scene also showed money scattered on the ground outside the building. Investigators have not confirmed whether the people seen jumping from the window were involved in the shooting or abduction.
Witnesses told CBS Miami that two men wearing shirts marked “police” were seen struggling with and beating a man before forcing him into the back seat of a vehicle. Authorities have not confirmed whether the man described by those witnesses was Bethune, and investigators have not said whether the clothing was connected to any legitimate law enforcement agency.
Several hours after the initial shooting call, at about 7:25 a.m., a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office captain found a man with multiple gunshot wounds along the shoulder of a roadway near Southwest 216th Street and Southwest 189th Avenue, investigators said. The man was later identified as Bethune.
Investigators were also called to the area of Southwest 248th Street and Southwest 157th Avenue after a vehicle was found burned. Authorities determined that the vehicle had been intentionally set on fire. Detectives said it matched the description of the vehicle associated with the people suspected in the abduction.
The discoveries allowed investigators to connect incidents separated by dozens of miles. Authorities said Bethune had been abducted from the North Miami apartment and that the man found along the roadway matched the description of the kidnapping victim. The burned vehicle also matched the one investigators believed had been used by those involved in the abduction.
Residents at the Aliro Apartments described hearing numerous gunshots before seeing people flee the building. The violence and the continuing investigation left some residents concerned about security at the complex. Police maintained a presence at the property as investigators worked to determine what happened inside the apartment and identify everyone involved.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive or announced an arrest. Investigators also have not established publicly whether everyone captured on cellphone video was involved in the crimes. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to identify those responsible and determine the full sequence of events.
