An 80-year-old homeowner was taken to a hospital for a minor medical concern after the Tuesday morning confrontation.
HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A suspected burglar was shot and killed Tuesday morning during a reported home invasion at a northwest Harris County residence, where authorities said an 80-year-old homeowner had called 911 to report a break-in.
Deputies were dispatched just before 9 a.m. Nov. 3 to the 15700 block of Misty Hollow Drive after receiving a report of a burglar and gunfire, according to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. Authorities said the homeowner encountered an unknown man at the property and that a shooting followed. Deputies found the man with a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 80-year-old homeowner was not physically injured in the shooting, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital for what officials described as a minor medical concern or as a precaution following the incident. No one else was inside the home at the time, according to authorities.
Sgt. Sidney Miller of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told KPRC that the homeowner said he encountered the man inside his home or on his property before firing at him. Investigators were seeking surveillance footage and witnesses as they worked to establish the full sequence of events surrounding the shooting.
Authorities have described the dead man as a suspected burglar or possible intruder, but his identity had not been released in the reports available Wednesday. Officials also had not publicly explained how he allegedly entered the property, what he was accused of doing immediately before the confrontation or whether he was armed.
It was also unclear whether the homeowner and the man knew each other before the shooting. Authorities had not publicly released a detailed account establishing the events that led up to the gunfire beyond the homeowner’s report of a break-in and the preliminary description of an encounter on the property.
The Precinct 4 Constable’s Office initially reported that deputies were responding to gunfire involving a possible home intruder. In its early account, the office said a resident had encountered an unknown person on his property and that a shooting occurred. Emergency medical personnel were called after deputies found a wounded man, who was later confirmed dead at the scene.
Later reporting provided additional details, including the homeowner’s age and the indication that the person killed was the suspected intruder. Investigators continued working to determine the circumstances of the shooting, including the events immediately before the homeowner fired and whether surveillance video or witness statements could provide additional evidence.
No arrest or criminal charge had been announced in connection with the shooting as of Wednesday night. Authorities said the investigation remained ongoing, and additional details about the dead man’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation had not been released.
