Police said four people were shot and two others were hit by vehicles during the late-night chaos.
FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, MI — Six people were injured late Saturday after gunfire broke out during a post-prom party at VFW Post 3734 on Airline Highway, where police said several people fired weapons and others were struck by vehicles.
Fruitport Township police said the investigation remained active Monday as detectives reviewed video from the scene and worked to identify who fired shots. The incident involved students from Muskegon High School and nearby communities, but school officials said the gathering was not sponsored by the district.
Officers were first called shortly after 11:50 p.m. Saturday for a report that someone had been hit by a vehicle in the road near the VFW hall. While officers were on their way, they learned that a shooting also had taken place at the same location. Police said four people were shot and taken to Trinity Health Hospital in Muskegon with injuries that were not life-threatening. Two other people were hit by vehicles during the same incident. One of them was seriously injured, police said.
Investigators said their early findings show that more than one person fired a gun. Authorities had not announced arrests or released the names of suspected shooters as of Monday. Police also had not said what started the confrontation. Fruitport Township Public Safety personnel responded, along with other Muskegon County law enforcement agencies. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab also assisted at the scene.
Neighbors described a sudden burst of gunfire and a crowd of young people running from the hall. Lisa Bosworth, who lives behind the VFW, said she heard what sounded like 30 to 40 shots just after 11:30 p.m. She said she looked outside and saw dozens of teens in her yard and driveway. “I seen them on the road, running as fast as they could for their life,” Bosworth said. “Fear. Terror. Horrific.”
The party followed Muskegon High School’s prom, but Muskegon Area Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Cortez said the after-party was not a school event. Cortez said the district knew some Muskegon students were involved, along with students and adults from nearby areas. He said the district was cooperating with police as investigators worked to confirm what happened. Cortez also said there were no reported issues during the school’s prom or pre-prom “show off” event earlier Saturday.
A VFW post official described the gathering as a private rental and said the renter had said the hall would be used for a family gathering. The official said he was notified shortly after midnight about a shooting in the north parking lot and two crashes on Airline Road in front of the post. When he arrived around 1 a.m., he said Airline Road had been closed and police had blocked off a large area near the post.
Witnesses said the scene became crowded before the shooting. Bosworth said many cars were parked along the road, making it hard for people to leave once panic spread. She estimated more than 200 people were at or near the gathering. Another witness, Regi Haines, said he arrived about 10 minutes before hearing gunshots. He said he ran out a back door with others and saw a vehicle hit someone during the confusion.
The shooting drew officers from several agencies, including police from Norton Shores, the Muskegon County area and Ottawa County, according to witness accounts. Crime scene tape remained up into Sunday morning before police cleared the area. The Michigan State Police forensic team reviewed the building and scene before the post was allowed to reopen access later Sunday morning.
One injured student was identified by family members as Jordyn, a Muskegon High School junior who was hit by a vehicle during the incident. Her mother, Tamara Williams, said the teen was expected to undergo several surgeries for injuries to her left leg. Police have not publicly identified the other injured people.
Detectives are reviewing video and gathering witness statements as they work to determine who fired shots, how many guns were used and what led to the violence. Police asked anyone with information to contact Detective Sergeant Bryan Rypstra or Deputy Chief Greg Poulson at the Fruitport Township Police Department, or to submit information through Silent Observer.
The case remained under investigation Monday, May 11, with no arrests announced and no public update on possible charges. Police said more details would be released as investigators confirm evidence from the scene.
