Police are investigating after a 15-year-old girl was seriously wounded early Saturday at a home in Fort Lauderdale.
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — A 15-year-old girl is expected to survive after she was shot early Saturday during an incident at a Fort Lauderdale home, police said. Officers responded about 3:45 a.m. to the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest Ninth Street after receiving a report of a shooting.
Fort Lauderdale police officers found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound and began providing aid until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived, according to police. The girl was taken to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert with serious injuries. Police later said she was expected to survive.
Investigators have not publicly identified the teenager or released the name of a suspect. Police also have not announced an arrest or provided a detailed account of what happened before the gunfire. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation as of Sunday.
The girl’s grandmother, Cynthia Scriven-Husband, told NBC 6 South Florida that the family believes the shooting followed a confrontation involving someone the teenager knew. Scriven-Husband said the family had been told that someone came to the home and threatened the girl before an altercation developed.
Scriven-Husband said the family understands that the person involved may have been a former friend of her granddaughter. She said the teenager and others came outside after someone allegedly arrived wanting to fight her. Gunfire followed, according to the family’s account. Police have not publicly confirmed the family’s description of what led to the shooting or identified who fired the shots.
Another local report said surveillance video from around the time of the shooting showed a person running along the street. Detectives later arrived at the home and worked to gather evidence, according to WSVN. Authorities have not said whether the person captured on video is considered a suspect or has any confirmed connection to the shooting.
The shooting happened during a violent early-morning period in Fort Lauderdale. Police responded about two hours earlier to a separate shooting in the 1600 block of Northwest Eighth Avenue, where a man was found fatally wounded after officers received a ShotSpotter alert, according to police information reported by Local 10. Authorities have not connected that shooting to the case involving the 15-year-old girl.
Police continued working to determine what led to the shooting of the teenager and had not released suspect information as of the latest reports. No arrest had been announced. Investigators were asking anyone with information about the case to contact Fort Lauderdale police.
