Police are investigating after a Lexus struck the teenagers as they tried to cross Arlington Avenue on an e-scooter and e-motorcycle.
RIVERSIDE, CA — Two 14-year-old boys were critically injured after an 88-year-old driver struck them while they were riding an e-scooter and an e-motorcycle through a Riverside intersection, according to police.
The collision happened about 7:46 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Arlington and Mitchell avenues. Riverside police officers and firefighters responded and found the two teenagers with major injuries. Both were taken to a local hospital, where authorities later described their conditions as critical.
A preliminary investigation found that the 88-year-old man was driving a silver Lexus west on Arlington Avenue when the vehicle struck the teenagers near the intersection, police said. The boys had been traveling south on Mitchell Avenue and were attempting to cross Arlington Avenue.
The driver remained at the scene and was interviewed by investigators. He was not injured, and authorities had announced no arrest in connection with the collision. Police said investigators had not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
The Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Detectives are working to determine the circumstances that led to the collision, including the movements of the Lexus and the two electric vehicles before the impact.
Traffic Bureau Sgt. Tim Jensen said collisions involving vehicles and riders carry a significant risk of serious injury. He urged drivers and riders to follow traffic laws, remain aware of their surroundings and use caution when entering intersections.
The crash also comes as Riverside police say officers have been receiving more calls involving groups of people riding electric bicycles and similar vehicles. Police spokesperson Steven Espinosa told KTLA that the increase has become a safety concern for the community.
The identities of the two teenagers and the driver have not been publicly released. Authorities also have not announced whether the boys were related or provided further details about the electric vehicles beyond identifying one as an e-scooter and the other as an e-moto.
Investigators continued seeking information from anyone who witnessed the collision or knew more about what happened. No later public update on the teenagers’ medical conditions was located in the reports reviewed through Sunday, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
