FAIRVIEW TWP., PA – A fatal crash claimed the lives of three construction workers in an active work zone on Interstate 83 in York County, Pennsylvania. The accident took place at around 3:25 a.m. on Wednesday.
The construction workers were working on I-83 South at mile marker 35.5 in Fairview Township, approximately 8 miles south of Harrisburg, when they were struck by the driver of a large box truck. The driver, a 24-year-old male, collided with a construction vehicle within the active work zone.
The impact of the crash led the box truck to continue onto the shoulder of the interstate, where it then hit the three workers. While the workers’ identities have not been publicly disclosed by local police, they were confirmed to be employees of a contractor for Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
Dave Thompson, a spokesperson for PennDOT, said the crew were engaged in sealing highway cracks when the incident occurred.
Interestingly, there was news from the Transportation Department a week prior indicating that CriLon Corp. of Somerset was performing overnight road work which included lane closures. The company was not immediately available for comment.
The status of the box truck driver’s legal accountability concerning the tragic incident has yet to be announced.
