Three people stabbed by violent ‘madman’ in random attack

STATEN ISLAND, NY – A violent incident shocked a peaceful Staten Island neighborhood on Friday when a man, described by locals as a “madman,” allegedly stabbed three people, killing one. The victims were two elderly neighbors and a third individual, according to police sources.

The horrifying event took place around 4:40 p.m. on Sunnyside Terrace, a tranquil, tree-lined street. An 81-year-old man lost his life, while his 78-year-old friend was critically injured. A 51-year-old man also sustained minor injuries during the triple stabbing, as reported by the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The suspect, a 57-year-old man, was apprehended at the scene. Witnesses described his demeanor as deranged. The NYPD confirmed the incident but did not immediately disclose any potential motives behind the violent act. Local residents suggested it seemed to be a random attack.

The 78-year-old victim’s son and granddaughter were present during the attack. The 16-year-old granddaughter reportedly threatened the suspect as her injured grandfather was taken away on a stretcher. The victim’s son attempted to confront the suspect but was restrained by police officers.

The 81-year-old victim was pronounced dead despite first responders’ efforts to save him. MaryAnn Nelson, a 72-year-old neighbor, described the deceased as a generous man. She witnessed the victim’s distraught wife shouting at the suspect as police took him into custody.

Nelson’s husband, Bill, described the incident as “totally senseless,” committed without any apparent reason.
