SANTA CLARA, CA – A 3-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene after he was found with a gunshot wound in a Santa Clara residence in the early hours of Tuesday, according to police reports.
Around 2:20 a.m., a woman placed a distress call to the police, alleging that her live-in boyfriend had shot her young son. The event occurred in an apartment located on the 3700 block of Poinciana Drive, located between the Lawrence Expressway and the city limits of Sunnyvale.
Upon reaching the scene in response to the call, officers discovered the child within the apartment unit. Despite initiating life-saving measures, the boy could not be saved and was declared dead at the scene.
The suspected shooter was found and arrested close to the scene. He fled the apartment on foot, according to Lieutenant Mike Crescini of the Santa Clara Police Department. The suspect, 24-year-old Santa Clara resident Sergio Colin Gomez, is expected to face charges of murder and resisting arrest, at minimum.
The police department’s investigation into this homicide is continuing. They have not yet made an announcement about the potential motive behind the actions of the suspect.
