A neighbor reported a foul odor before officers forced their way into the Downey Street residence Monday evening.
HOUSTON, TX — Houston police are investigating the deaths of two men found inside a north Houston home Monday evening after a neighbor reported a foul odor coming from the property.
Authorities were sent shortly after 5 p.m. to a residence in the 11600 block of Downey Street, near Little York Road. Emergency crews forced their way into the home and found the two bodies inside, according to Houston police. Investigators have not determined how the men died, and their identities had not been released Tuesday.
Police said there were no obvious signs of trauma on either body. Investigators nevertheless described the deaths as suspicious because the two men were found together inside the home. A cause and manner of death remained undetermined as the investigation continued.
HPD Detective Gerardo Herrera said authorities responded after a concerned neighbor noticed the odor and contacted officials. Police have not released additional details about conditions inside the residence or how long the two men may have been dead.
Police said it appeared that three brothers owned the house. Neighbors told investigators they had not seen the men associated with the property for about a week. Authorities have not confirmed whether either of the people found dead was among the homeowners.
The circumstances leading to the deaths also remained unclear. Police had not announced evidence showing what happened inside the home before officers arrived, and no information about a possible suspect had been released.
The Houston Police Department’s investigation remains active. Investigators are working to establish the identities of the two men and determine what caused their deaths. Additional findings are expected to depend in part on further investigative work and official identification of the deceased.
