An 18-year-old and a 15-year-old were hospitalized in stable condition after an altercation at the Liberty City school.
MIAMI, FL — Two students were hospitalized Monday after an altercation at Miami Northwestern Senior High School led to a stabbing, according to fire officials and local reports.
Miami Fire Rescue crews responded to the school at 1100 NW 71st St. in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood at about 12:27 p.m. after receiving reports of an altercation. First responders found an 18-year-old with a stab wound and a 15-year-old boy with a cut to his hand. Both were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The 18-year-old was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Officials said the younger student was also taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. Authorities had not released more detailed information about either student’s injuries as of Monday night.
Video posted on social media and reviewed by local news organizations appeared to show a fight involving several students inside the school. One student could be seen being punched and kicked before the group separated. The footage did not establish who was responsible for the stabbing, and authorities had not publicly explained the full sequence of events.
Students told Local 10 News that the school was placed on lockdown while officials searched for a suspect. Miami-Dade Schools Police investigators were later seen at the campus, where part of the area behind the school was closed off with crime scene tape.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools said the incident was immediately addressed by school administrators and the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department. The district said the matter resulted in criminal charges, but officials did not identify who had been charged or specify the alleged offenses.
Miami-Dade Schools Police was leading the investigation, with Miami-Dade crime scene investigators assisting, according to WSVN. Authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or disclosed what led to the confrontation.
WSVN reported that relatives of the student who suffered the stab wound said he was doing OK at the hospital late Monday. Officials had not announced whether either student had been released.
The investigation remained active Monday night. Authorities had not released additional information about the circumstances of the stabbing, the identities of those involved or the criminal charges referenced by the school district.
