A 16-year-old faces a homicide charge, while a second teen is accused of obstruction of justice in the investigation.
HAHNVILLE, LA — Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Hahnville, including a 16-year-old accused of second-degree homicide, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to reports of a shooting around 2 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, in the 300 block of Smith Street. Authorities found the 14-year-old wounded and took him to a hospital, where he later died. Investigators initially detained a 16-year-old boy and later arrested him in connection with the death.
The 16-year-old faces charges of second-degree homicide, obstruction of justice and illegal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, authorities said. His name has not been released publicly because of his age. The charges are allegations, and authorities have not released a detailed account of what they believe happened before the shooting.
On Tuesday, Aug. 11, detectives announced a second arrest. Jalil Washington, 17, of Smith Street in Hahnville, was arrested in connection with the homicide investigation and faces an obstruction of justice charge, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not publicly detailed what Washington is accused of doing that led to the obstruction charge.
The victim’s name also had not been publicly released in the reports reviewed. His aunt told WVUE that he was supposed to begin his freshman year at Hahnville High School on Tuesday, one day after the shooting. She said the 14-year-old and the 16-year-old accused in the case were best friends.
The aunt said the victim’s family did not know why the 16-year-old had a gun or exactly how the shooting unfolded. She also said the victim’s sister heard the gunfire and saw another friend attempting to help her brother after he was shot. The families said the accused 16-year-old lived on the same street as the victim.
The mother of the 16-year-old also spoke with WVUE off camera. She said she wanted to support the victim’s family but was keeping her distance and had exchanged text messages with the victim’s mother. She was with her son while investigators interviewed him, according to the station.
Authorities have not announced a motive or publicly described the circumstances that led to the gunfire. They also have not released information establishing how the firearm involved in the shooting was obtained. No additional charges or arrests had been announced in the latest reports reviewed.
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said the homicide investigation remains ongoing. Detectives were continuing to seek information about the shooting as investigators worked to determine the sequence of events and the roles of those involved.
