Two wounded in shooting involving NYPD officer

Police said a second gunman remained at large after gunfire near West 125th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

NEW YORK, NY — Two men were wounded Friday evening after a shooting outside a Harlem convenience store led to an NYPD officer firing his weapon during a chase, police said Saturday.

The shooting drew a large police response to one of Harlem’s busiest corridors and opened a Force Investigation Division review into who fired the shot that wounded the suspected gunman. Police said a 22-year-old victim was shot several times, the suspected shooter was later struck once, and a second gunman fled the area.

Police said the first shots were fired at about 6:20 p.m. Friday, April 24, near West 125th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. According to the NYPD account, a 32-year-old man walked up to a 22-year-old man sitting outside a convenience store and opened fire at close range. Two plainclothes officers were driving along West 125th Street and saw the shooting, police said. One officer stopped to help the wounded victim while the other chased the suspected shooter north on Amsterdam Avenue. Police said the officer rounded a corner as another man ran into the intersection and fired at the fleeing suspect. The officer also fired his weapon.

The suspected shooter was identified by police as Randy Negron, 32. Police said Negron was struck once, but investigators had not determined Saturday whether the bullet came from the NYPD officer or the second gunman. The 22-year-old victim and Negron were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital. Negron was listed in stable condition and was expected to survive, while the victim was last reported in serious but stable condition, police said. No officers or bystanders were reported injured. Police said bullets from either the officer or the second gunman went through the glass of a nearby MedRite Urgent Care location at the intersection.

The NYPD said Negron’s gun was recovered at the scene. The second gunman, who police said fired in the middle of the intersection, had not been arrested by Saturday. Investigators were reviewing surveillance video from the area because the two plainclothes officers were not wearing body cameras at the time. Police said the officers were headed to a meal break when they witnessed the first shooting. Officials said the shooting was captured on nearby cameras, which are expected to be central to the review of the gunfire sequence and the path of the bullets.

Police said Negron was on parole for an attempted murder conviction tied to a June 2015 shooting several blocks from Friday’s scene. In that earlier case, police said, he fired a gun into a crowd. He was released from prison in June 2025 and was on parole until August 2029, according to police. The NYPD said Negron has 11 prior arrests, including arrests for other violent felonies. Officials did not release the name of the 22-year-old victim, and they did not say Saturday whether the victim and Negron knew each other before the shooting.

The case remained under active investigation Saturday, with charges against Negron pending and the second gunman still being sought. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is reviewing the officer’s discharge, a standard step after police gunfire. Investigators are also working to determine whether the second gunman was targeting Negron, acting with another person or became involved for another reason. Police had not released a description of the second gunman by Saturday morning.

The shooting unfolded on a busy stretch of 125th Street, near stores, clinics and steady evening foot traffic. Images from the scene showed bullet damage at the urgent care location, a reminder of how quickly the gunfire spread beyond the first confrontation outside the convenience store. Police said one officer rendered aid to the 22-year-old victim while the other pursued Negron. The fast-moving scene left investigators with several points to sort out: the first attack, the chase, the second shooter’s gunfire and the officer’s response.

As of Saturday, April 25, police said Negron was hospitalized in stable condition, the 22-year-old victim remained in serious but stable condition, and the search for the second gunman was continuing.
