Childhood friend charged with murder for killing man with a gym weight bar

A shocking crime has unfolded in Mt. Tamborine, Australia, as a man’s life was tragically cut short in his own home. Matthew Berry, a 37-year-old father-of-two, was found dead by his ex-partner last week. Now, police have charged his childhood friend, Daniel Robert McJannett, with murder. The details surrounding the case are both disturbing and perplexing, as investigators allege that McJannett used a gym weight bar as the murder weapon.

According to court documents, McJannett and Berry had been friends since they were eight years old. In fact, McJannett even served as a groomsman at Berry’s wedding in 2021. However, their friendship took a dark and tragic turn when McJannett allegedly committed this heinous act. In addition to the murder charge, McJannett is also facing charges of possessing a significant amount of cannabis that was found at Berry’s residence. Police have revealed that witnesses have come forward, suggesting that Berry may have been involved in cannabis dealing.

The investigation took a significant step forward when police discovered CCTV footage from Berry’s smashed phone. The footage reportedly showed McJannett at the property on the afternoon of the murder. This crucial piece of evidence has led authorities to focus their attention on McJannett as the primary suspect. However, the accused did not appear in court, and his lawyer did not make a bail application. The case has been adjourned to Beenleigh Magistrates Court, where it will continue next Wednesday.

Detective Inspector Chris Knight, of Logan CIB, emphasized the violent nature of Berry’s death. He also stated that, at this stage, they are not actively seeking any other suspects in connection with the alleged murder.
