A man and his girlfriend from Dallas are now facing murder charges, accused of fatally shooting a woman who was reportedly previously romantically involved with the man. The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, May 20th.
Dallas Police were alerted to a shooting incident around 1 a.m. Upon arrival, they found that Keerstin Cooper had been transported to the hospital by a non-emergency vehicle, bearing a gunshot wound. Cooper succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Details revealed in a police affidavit point to a heated exchange between Cooper and Breaira Martin, the girlfriend of Gabriel Leuyas.
Investigators have put forth that Martin became angered over Cooper’s previous involvement with Leuyas.
As the argument escalated, police allege that Martin summoned Leuyas to the scene and urged him to shoot Cooper. The affidavit states that Leuyas obliged, drawing a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and firing twice at Cooper through a car windshield.
In the ensuing chaos, a third woman bravely rushed into the vehicle and drove Cooper to the hospital.
Investigators have cited surveillance footage from the vicinity that distinctly captured the event. The identification of the suspects was aided by an anonymous tip, which led to further evidence sourced from gang records, social media, and police body camera footage.
Leuyas and Martin have been charged with murder and are currently detained in the Dallas County Jail. Further to the murder charge, Leuyas is facing an additional charge for unlawfully carrying a weapon. Martin is also being charged with resisting arrest.
