Authorities identified the man killed as 22-year-old Zirovick Depina of Brockton as investigators searched for answers Sunday.
TAUNTON, MA — Eight people were shot during a large house party in Taunton early Sunday, leaving a 22-year-old Brockton man dead and another person seriously injured, according to authorities investigating the overnight violence.
Police and emergency crews responded to 911 calls reporting gunfire and multiple shooting victims at 261 Weir St. at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday. Investigators said a large gathering had been taking place in the yard, and several people were still at the property when officers arrived. Other victims had left the scene and sought medical treatment on their own.
Authorities ultimately identified eight shooting victims from the gathering, all of them in their early 20s. Zirovick Depina, 22, of Brockton, was pronounced dead early Sunday morning, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. One of the seven surviving victims was listed in serious but stable condition. Officials said the remaining victims suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Taunton police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and State Police crime scene personnel were investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or announced a motive as of Sunday night. No arrests had been announced.
The response unfolded in a residential area as police and ambulances converged on Weir Street. Nearby residents described hearing repeated gunfire before seeing officers rush into the neighborhood. Anthony Correia, who lives across the street, told CBS Boston that he had been watching football when he heard the shots. He later recorded cellphone video showing part of the emergency response.
Another nearby resident, Josh Andrews, told Boston 25 News that he saw police arrive quickly and watched an officer move through the area carrying a rifle. Andrews also said officers searched near railroad tracks behind the house. Investigators returned to the area Sunday as they continued gathering evidence, according to local news reports.
Several shell casings were found near the tracks behind the property, CBS Boston reported. Party supplies, including balloons and outdoor items, remained at the home as investigators worked at the scene later Sunday. Boston 25 News also reported that gunfire damaged a nearby vehicle, including a shattered window. Authorities have not publicly said how many firearms were involved or how many people may have fired shots.
The shooting prompted a homicide investigation led by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office along with Taunton police. Officials have not released the names of the seven surviving victims or additional details about what led to the gunfire. They also have not publicly described any relationship among the victims or between the victims and whoever fired the shots.
The investigation remained active into Sunday night. Police continued seeking information about the shooting, while authorities had not announced an arrest, identified a suspect or released a possible motive. Further details were expected as investigators reviewed evidence and interviewed people connected to the gathering.
