DEERFIELD BEACH, FL — A 43-year-old Boca Raton woman was arrested after Florida Highway Patrol troopers said she bit off part of her husband’s ear during an argument as he drove north on Interstate 95 in Broward County with two young children in the vehicle.
Amy Arlene Baker faces one count of aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability and two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to jail records cited by Local10. The Florida Highway Patrol arrest report described a dispute between Baker and her husband as they traveled near Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach after attending a boat party in the Fort Lauderdale area.
Local10, citing the arrest report, said the incident happened Saturday evening. Troopers were alerted after dispatchers received a report of a domestic incident, and investigators later went to West Boca Medical Center in Boca Raton, where Baker and her husband had gone after leaving the highway. CBS Miami also reviewed an FHP arrest report but reported a different day and time for the incident. The available reports otherwise describe the same sequence of events.
According to the arrest report, Baker’s husband told investigators that the couple began arguing about problems in their relationship while he was driving. He said Baker struck him in the face with an open hand and, a short time later, grabbed his head and bit his right ear, removing a portion of it. He told troopers he then exited I-95 and drove to the hospital for treatment.
Baker gave investigators a different account of how the physical confrontation began. According to CBS Miami, she told the responding trooper that her husband had struck her in the face before she bit him. Her husband denied striking her. The trooper investigating the incident identified Baker as the primary aggressor and placed her under arrest, the report said.
The arrest report said Baker acknowledged biting her husband and told investigators she had become frustrated and lost control. She also told the trooper that she recovered the detached portion of his ear and gave it to medical personnel at the hospital. When the investigating trooper left the hospital, Baker’s husband was awaiting surgery in an attempt to repair his injury, according to CBS Miami.
The couple’s children, ages 1 and 7, were inside the vehicle during the confrontation, according to the arrest report. Friends who had been traveling behind the family in another vehicle later took the children to a residence. Authorities did not report that either child was physically injured.
The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified about the incident, according to the arrest report. Officials had not publicly disclosed what action, if any, the agency would take involving the children. Baker was initially booked into the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale. Local10 reported that she was no longer listed in the county jail’s online database Tuesday afternoon, while details of any bond or release conditions were not immediately available.
The charges remain allegations, and court records establishing how Baker will respond to them were not immediately available in the reports reviewed Wednesday. Authorities also had not released an updated account of her husband’s medical condition following the planned surgery.
