Court records accuse Alaya Jones and Kaleb Maglott of robbing and killing Jones’ 27-year-old sister inside her apartment.
HOUSTON, TX — A 20-year-old woman and her partner have been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of the woman’s older sister, who was found dead inside her west Houston apartment, according to court records and local reporting.
Investigators said Aveyia Webb, 27, was found dead Thursday morning at her apartment in the 8100 block of Richmond Avenue. Relatives had become concerned after they were unable to reach Webb, prompting an aunt to go to the apartment to check on her. Court documents accuse Webb’s younger sister, Alaya Jones, and Jones’ partner, Kaleb Maglott, of robbing and killing Webb. Both defendants were arrested Thursday and face capital murder charges. The allegations against them have not been proven in court.
Webb’s aunt, Beverly Hobbs, said she went to the apartment after Webb stopped responding to relatives. Family members described the lack of communication as unusual for Webb. Hobbs said she knocked on the door and received no answer before entering the apartment, where she found her niece dead on a couch.
Court records cited by local news reports allege Jones and Maglott robbed Webb in connection with her death. Family members also said Webb’s vehicle and wallet were taken. The available reports did not establish whether prosecutors have publicly detailed all of the evidence supporting the capital murder charges, and authorities had not released a complete account of the circumstances leading to Webb’s death.
Relatives said Jones had been living in Florida before traveling to Houston. According to family members interviewed by ABC13, Jones had told relatives that she planned to move back to Houston. Relatives also said investigators recovered text messages from Jones’ phone that they believe show the killing had been planned before the trip. Those claims were attributed to Webb’s family, and a complete set of the messages was not independently available in the reporting reviewed for this story.
Edie Smith-Anderson, another of Webb’s aunts, told ABC13 that the family never expected Webb could be in danger from her younger sister. She said relatives were particularly shaken by allegations that someone within Webb’s own family was involved in her death.
Friends and relatives described Webb as a hairstylist who was preparing to begin pharmacy school. Rosie Hart, identified as the sister of Webb’s boyfriend and one of Webb’s close friends, remembered her as a positive presence in the lives of those around her. Family members said Webb was preparing for a new stage of her life when she died.
The capital murder charges are allegations, and Jones and Maglott are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Court records and local reporting confirm that both were arrested Thursday, but the reporting reviewed for this article did not establish a final case disposition or provide a complete timeline for upcoming court proceedings. The investigation and criminal cases remain pending.
