Driver shot, passenger killed in bus shooting

CHICAGO (WLS) – A shooting on a CTA bus in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood has resulted in the death of a passenger and serious injury to the bus driver. The incident occurred around 12:14 a.m. Monday, when an altercation on the southbound #29 State Street bus escalated, leading a passenger to open fire.

According to reports, a man in his late 20s was fatally shot in the chest during the conflict and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The bus driver, meanwhile, suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. He was also hospitalized and is currently undergoing surgery but is expected to recover.

The conflict took a dramatic turn when the bus veered off and hit a curb on State Street near 34th Street, where the shooter subsequently fled on foot. Tire tracks and a dislodged street post mark the scene of the incident.

Keith Hill, the President of ATU Local 241, expressed his concerns about safety, stating, “We don’t come to work to be assaulted, shot at…The sad part is my membership don’t feel safe at work. We want our own police department. No one can secure us better than us.” Dorval R. Carter, President of the Chicago Transportation Authority, also condemned the violence.

Currently, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Chicago Police Department’s Area One Detectives are conducting a homicide investigation, and both police and CTA officials are reviewing surveillance footage to aid in the investigation.
