US Joins Partnership With Australia

( – On September 15, 2021, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States (AUKUS), announced a trilateral agreement, with a stated goal of strengthening mutual security and defense interests, including assisting Australia in building a nuclear-powered submarine fleet. They have also announced an initiative to develop a hypersonic missile program to help counter those of the People’s Republic of China and Russia. All three countries completed successful test firings of the new weapons.

In a general sense, a hypersonic missile can fly either on a ballistic course or as a highly maneuverable cruise missile. The threshold to meet the definition is the ability to travel five times the speed of sound (Mach 5), or approximately 760 mph.

AUKUS has also said it would work on defense systems to counter the threat posed by the Chinese and Russian versions of the weapons. Chinese news outlets allied with or controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) accuse the United States of using Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine to escalate an arms race that “will bring greater harm” to regional and international peace initiatives.

China’s aggression toward Taiwan and its possessiveness of the South China Sea might indicate the CCP will take a hard-line stance on this development.
