Last February, 23-year-old Englishwoman Katie Covell was waiting for her baby to arrive – and it was already three days overdue. Suffering from cabin fever, she decided to go shopping to get out of the house and pick up some things she needed for the baby, so she headed off for a local Morrisons grocery store in the West Yorkshire city of Leeds.
Minutes after reaching the store, Katie felt a twinge. She ignored it, but soon things started demanding her attention. A sharp pain hit her, dropping her to the floor, and then her contractions started.
Katie’s screams caught the attention of Cherise, one of the supermarket’s cleaners, and she rushed over to help while other staff set up a screen to give them some privacy. Luckily for Katie, it wasn’t a long labor, and in just 10 minutes Cherise delivered her son, Sebastian. When paramedics arrived, they were amazed to find the job already done.
The store certainly rose to the occasion, sending Katie a hamper of baby essentials, but Cherise the helpful cleaner made the biggest impression. Not only has Katie stayed in touch with her since Sebastian’s birth, she even asked her to be his godmother – an honor Cherise was happy to accept. In fact, they celebrated Sebastian’s first birthday together at the store where he was born.
