Do You Have Prolonged Covid Symptoms? New Research Reveals The Aftermath

Brain fog, other long Covid symptoms can last more than a year, study finds – NBC News

Brain fog, numbness, tingling, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus and fatigue are the most frequently reported symptoms of long Covid, according to a new study.

Adults who had a confirmed COVID-19 infection are at greater risk of developing pulmonary embolism or respiratory conditions. They also have higher risk of kidney failure, blood clots, or neurologic conditions.

In a study of patients aged 18 – 64 and 65 years, 38% of case-patients experienced an incident condition compared with 16% of controls.

Northwestern University researchers found that 85 percent of patients with long Covid infections reported at least four lasting neurological problems.

The researchers followed up on 52 patients who had mild Covid symptoms for up to 18 months. They found that most neurological symptoms persisted and still affected their quality of life.

The researchers at Northwestern Medicine studied patients with long-standing COVID-19, a rare disease that causes problems with cognition, heart rate and blood pressure, as well as gastrointestinal problems. They found that some symptoms increased over time, while others improved.

Dr. Avindra Nath said that the inflammation caused by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid, damages brain cells and neurons.

The morning rundown is a newsletter that lets you know what’s happening in the world.

Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos said continuing to track lasting symptoms is crucial to help experts separate Covid symptoms from the natural healing process.

No More Payphones- It’s The End Of An Era

End of an era as New York removes last public payphone – The Guardian US

Nowadays, most people have smartphones that they use for connection, entertainment, and work. All of the convenient features of their devices fit right in their pocket.

This wasn’t always the case. Payphones have been a long-standing tool that people have used to keep contact with others when they don’t have access to a landline.

With so much cellphone usage, these payphone booths have become seemingly insignificant. Most people don’t think to find the nearest payphone if they need to call a family member on their way home.

The lack of payphone usage prompted New York City to make a major change. The city removed the last public payphone from a Times Square street on Monday. Municipal officials cited a need for digital innovation.

The kiosks put in place of the payphones offer free WiFi, domestic calling, 911, and 311 access. You can also charge your devices at these stations if your phone dies while you’re on the go.

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine admitted to missing the payphones, but felt a twinge of nostalgia seeing them go.

The city replaced 7,500 payphones with LinkNYC kiosks in 2016. Most of the old payphones were sent to the scrapyard by 2020.

New Yorkers can visit the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibit, “Analog City: NYC B.C. (Before Computers),” to remember the days before cellphones became widely used.

Runner Who Died During Marathon Finally Identified

Runner who died in Brooklyn half marathon heat ID’d as David Reichman – New York Post

David Reichman, 32, collapsed near the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon. He was declared dead in the hospital. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. This is the first fatality to happen in this race for several years.

A 31-year-old runner fell to the ground after crossing the finish line in 2014, which is the last time a death occurred at the Brooklyn half marathon.

This year was the first time that the race was held in person since the pandemic started, and it was highly anticipated.

The FDNY said 16 people were injured, including the man who died after collapsing during the race. Four more people collapsed near the end of the race due to the extreme weather.

The New York Road Runners said it had medical staff on hand to help runners, spectators, volunteers and staff. The group also said it was closely monitoring weather conditions.

Anamaria Flores, 42, of Howard Beach, said the race was exhausting and she had to walk the final leg. This is a major frustration to any runner considering how much time and energy they invest in preparing for each race.
